Do you need a water softener?

Do you need a water softener? The answer is ‘yes’ if you have hard water or are using well water. You may be pleasantly surprised at the benefits that soft water can produce. Here are some:

North Star Water Softener
North Star Water Softener

1) Cleaner and shinier silverware, glassware, mirrors, tiles, cars, or any plumbing fixtures. Softer skin and clean, smooth hair.

2) Reduced soap curd makes cleaning easier and reduces housework.

3) Uses less soap and shampoo because of the rich lather softened water and soap produces.

4) Softer clothes without hard minerals trapped in the fabric. Fabrics last longer and whites stay whiter without the dingy gray caused by hard water.

Clogged drains can make life miserable.

Do you suffer with clogged drains? Clogged drains are a common problem, especially in cases where one or more members of the household has long hair. Long hair can become wrapped around parts of the drain and become clumped together with soap. Clogs can be minimized by the use of a drain protector and a soap tray.

What causes a shower drain to be clogged?
Soap scum buildup and hair are the two main causes of clogged shower drains. Dirt or grease also can line the drain and cause a backup, and even minerals from hard water can cause issues. Clearing a clogged shower drain can be an unpleasant experience.

Shower drains tend to gradually slow as a buildup starts, which is how you know that a clog is coming on. Here are some tips to follow:

  • Don’t use a chemical drain cleaner if the drain is completely backed up. It can damage the piping.
  • Keep the hair clear of the drain. If the hair clog is tight enough to block water, it will stick together as you pull it up. Run a bio-friendly solution down the drain every month to help prevent soap scum and sludge buildup.
  • When the drain is slow, call to have it cleaned.
  • The vast majority of clogged shower drain problems can be solved by using some fairly simple and straightforward methods and tools. A few things you can try are:
    • Pour boiling water down the drain
    • Take the drain cover off and pull out the clog by hand.
    • Try using a plunger, a straightened out wire hanger, a hook or plumber’s snake to clear out the clog.

If your shower clog is caused by a larger object that is caught in the drain, you may want to call a plumber. A homemade or purchased snake may not be able to remove solid objects.

To prevent future clogs, consider buying hair-catching inserts that can be placed over a bathtub or shower drain, and flush all the drains in the house simultaneously.

Is your toilet on the fritz?

Your toilet is an out-of-sight-out-of-mind appliance, right? Until it’s not working. That’s when you are in need of a “plumber Cincinnati.” (or plumber Dayton) Toilet repair is one of our specialties.  Whether it’s the fill-valve, flapper, or any other part of the guts on the tank, we are well stocked to meet most any need.

A fatigued flapper, for example, can leak dozens and dozens of gallons of water every month; even without you knowing it. It’s more than being a good steward of a precious resource; it’s often money down the drain, quite literally.

Perhaps rather than toilet repair, you’d prefer a new toilet. We can do that as well. We have relationships with most supply houses, so if you’re looking for plumbers in Cincinnati or plumbers in Dayton we stand ready to serve.  We have a wide selection from which to choose from, and we’re certain we can find one that meets your needs. Check us out. We work hard to develop relationships, and our reviews on places like Yelp or Google reflect that. We’re quite proud of that. So, do your research and you can count on our very best effort. Thanks for considering United.

United is a small, family owned and operated plumbing and HVAC company serving Cincinnati, Dayton and the surrounding areas. We’re glad to provide references. Naturally, we’re licensed, bonded and insured.

Which is the best furnace?

Which is the best Furnace? That’s a question HVAC people are asked with some regularity. Despite the flaming that “brand wars” produce, our 25 years of experience has produced an observation that may surprise you—–and perhaps disappoint you if you were looking for a pat, “Brand X.”

Unlike a radio or toaster, for example, a furnace is not a “plug and play” device. There are many variables that are crucial if the furnace is to be safe, provide reliable comfort and reasonable utility bills. That requires not simply knowledge and experience, but conscientiousness as well.

Done correctly, it is our experienced opinion that most any furnace on the market today will give you two decades + of reliable service. So, if you’re in need of heating and cooling services your primary focus should be on the people who are putting it in. As far as heating and cooling is concerned, in other words, the quality of the installation is more critical than the name on the front.

Sure, an HVAC professional will often have a “Coke vs Pepsi” preference, (and we’re no different) but we OFTEN see a homeowner give both credit and criticism to a brand the brand simply doesn’t deserve. In other words, the issues we see —-good or bad—-are most always attributable to the way it was installed.

So, choose your installing HVAC contractor carefully. And, you’re likely going to have questions as to the types of options your family needs. A good heating and cooling provider will walk you through that process and produce the best system for your needs; whatever brand you end up with. (we primarily (but not exclusively) sell York furnaces, not because they’re the best necessarily, but because they’re committed to excellent service. That is a value we share and support. www.york.com)
